Apple releases iOS 11 beta 4 sports new app icons, prevents automatic connection to bad Wi-Fi networks and more

Coinciding with the release of the final Android O Developer Preview 4, Apple Inc. Monday announced the latest developer preview for its operating system.

Apple’s fourth iOS 11 developer beta comes just two weeks after the previous release and with it a host of new features and updates.

If you downloaded the previous betas, you can do an over-the-air update to upgrade your iOS device to iOS 11 beta 3. In the Settings app > General > Software Update > tap “Download and install.” Make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi and a power outlet. If you held off downloading the previous betas, you can download the fourth beta from the Apple Developer Program website.

As is custom, the third public beta will likely land in the next few days and will probably contain the same changes listed below.

Here’s a look at the new features discovered in iOS 11 developer beta 4 so far:

Updates for the Notification Center

In iOS 11 developer preview 4, when you swipe left on a notification on the lock screen, you will be provided with the options to view or clear the notification. Notifications can also be opened if you slide completely to the right or you can clear a notification by sliding completely to the left.

When you tap the view option or tap on the notification, a new screen will instruct you to use TouchID or a passcode to unlock your device and go to the relevant app.

New icons

In preview 4, Apple has introduced new icons for the Contacts, Notes and Reminders app while Contacts also receives a new icon in the Settings app.

Apple has also tweaked the Wi-Fi icon that displays when a user is connected to a WiFi network. The new icon has thicker, more uniform lines. There is also a slightly modified Safari app icon.

There are also new icons added to the bottom of Spotlight search, which corresponds to the Safari, Maps or App Store search options.

There are also new icons in the Control Center for the Timer icon and the Screen Recording icon, which once tapped shows a countdown before it starts recording your screen,

Settings app updates

In the General section of the Settings app, under About, the Capacity listed shows the total amount of storage for the specific device as listed on marketing material rather than the actual storage space minus the size of the iOS.

AirDrop gets a dedicated section in the Settings app under General where users can toggle the feature off, set it to everyone or limit the feature to their contacts. Previously to control AirDrop settings, users had to go to the Control Center.

The Accounts & Passwords section in the Settings app has received a slightly updated icon. The icon now displays the key vertically instead of horizontally.

Wi-Fi

A new feature in iOS 11 developer beta 4, which has been discovered by a beta user and not yet publicized by Apple, will automatically disable auto-join for Wi-Fi networks with poor connectivity.

Apple added the auto-join button, accessed by tapping the blue “i” icon next to the Wi-Fi network, in a previous beta of iOS 11.

App Store

A new option in the App Store allows the Updates tab to be refreshed by pulling downwards.

New splash screen

The Notes and Photos apps have received new splash screens that will introduce users to any few features.

App Switcher

With the latest beta of iOS 11, when the App Switcher is empty it will automatically close and users won’t be able to open it if it is empty.
