The Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin, Europe’s largest annual technology show, kicks off on Friday as many of the large manufacturers showcase their new products ahead of the holiday season.
The weeklong event officially starts on Sept. 1, but press conferences start Aug. 30. Here’s a look at some of the confirmed and more speculative products that are expected to be unveiled at IFA:
LG Corp. is set to unveil its latest flagship, the six-inch V30, at a press conference on Aug. 31. With the number of speculative and confirmed features from the company itself, there’s little unknown about the device.
The device will include facial recognition, a feature that will compete with Apple Inc.’s premium iPhone 8 set to launch on Sept. 12, and voice recognition. The V30 will feature a plastic OLED FullVision display, as well as a dual-facing camera with a f/1.6 aperture and a glass Crystal Clear lens.
LG is also expected to unveil the larger V30 Plus at the event.
Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. launched its flagship Note8 at its Unpacked event last week. Although no additional smartphones from the company are likely at IFA, there should be some new smartwatches and fitness trackers.
The Gear Fit2 Pro, which has already leaked online, is an update to the Gear Fit2 and will feature 5 ATM water resistance, which will allow users to track their swimming workouts. The device will also support music playback and will offer support for offline Spotify tracks. The expected retail price is $200.
Samsung is also expected to update its Gear S line with the launch of a new Gear Sport smartwatch. Details about the Gear Sport are scarce apart from the fact that the device will have an optical heart rate monitor, Bluetooth and WiFi.
AsusTek Computer Inc. has already unveiled five smartphones this year, including its Zenfone AR in July and a further four Zenfones this month, so no additional smartphones are expected from the company at IFA.
In the past, Asus has used IFA to introduce its latest smartwatches, so we could see a successor to the ZenWatch 3. There will also likely be plenty of gaming hardware from the company’s Republic of Gamers range.
Moto X4 leak via Evan Blass
Lenovo Group Ltd.’s subsidiary Motorola is set to unveil its 5.2-inch Moto X4 at IFA. The Moto X4 is expected to sit just below the Z range of flagship Motorola devices and will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 chip, a full HD screen, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, plus a microSD card.
The Moto X4 is rumored to feature a 3,000mAh and is IP68 certified. The device will also feature a dual rear camera with an 8-megapixel and 12MP camera, plus a 16MP selfie camera. There’s also a fingerprint scanner that recognizes gestures.
Lenovo announced its Yoga 910 at IFA 2016 so we could see a successor this year. The Yoga 910 successor could feature Intel Corp.’s latest 8th-generation processors, considering Dell Inc.’s recent update to its XPS 13 lineup.
Lenovo could also announce some mid-range laptops at the event.
Sony Corp. is expected to unveil the Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact. If the rumors are to be believed, unlike other smartphone manufacturers who are moving towards bezel-less designs and dual-rear cameras, Sony is sticking to the same design as its predecessors. In addition to the two large bezels, the Xperia XZ1 is expected to feature a 5.2-inch, Full HD display, a Snapdragon 835 processor and a 19MP rear-facing camera.
Microsoft Corp. is expected to have a large presence at IFA with regards to the launch of its Windows Mixed Reality headsets from manufacturers like Dell, Lenovo and HP Inc. We will also get to see Microsoft’s Mixed Reality controllers at IFA.
IFA is also expected to reveal more details about Microsoft and Qualcomm Inc.’s plans for ARM-powered laptops from Asus, HP and Lenovo, which was announced at Computex earlier this year.
Not much is known with regards to what Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. plans to unveil at IFA. The company has confirmed a press conference for Saturday, which will focus on Huawei’s artificial intelligence efforts.

Huawei could also announce a Western release date for its Nova 2 and Nova 2 Plus released in May.
No high-end smartphone announcements are expected as Huawei’s phablet, the Mate 8, which is expected to compete with Samsung’s Galaxy Note8 and LG’s V30, is set to launch later in the year on Oct. 16.
HTC Corp. announced at the start of the year that it plans to unveil six or seven smartphones this year and have already launched the U11, U Play and U Ultra. We could see one or more new smartphones from HTC at this year’s event.
