Puppet acquires startup Distelli to bolster its cloud automation platform
Cloud automation provider Puppet Inc. has snapped up a startup called Distelli Inc., which builds software that helps developers deploy their code more efficiently.
Puppet is a fairly well-known company that offers a variety of cloud-native software development tools designed to ease enterprises’ transition to cloud computing. The company’s main offering is its Puppet Enterprise platform, though it also offers an open-source version of its software called Puppet 5 that comes with less features.
Both platforms provide capabilities that help developers manage infrastructure and applications across the entire software delivery pipeline. The main idea is that developers can manage their infrastructure as code, automating functions such as code review, testing, continuous integration and deployment to speed up application development.
As for Distelli, it was only founded as recently as 2015, but it’s backed to the tune of $2.8 million in a round that was led by notable venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. The company offers tools that allow developers to automate the deployment of software code onto virtual machines and containers, in any public cloud or physical data center. Distelli said customers such as DocuSign Inc. and Usermind Inc. also use its platform for better visibility into their software development processes through its dashboards.
The acquisition means that Puppet can enable this end-to-end visibility and better controls over application delivery for its own customers. The companies said they plan to unify their operations and development workflows so that customers can build their apps faster and get them out of the door sooner.
“Today, a company’s success is predicated on how quickly and successfully it can deliver new experiences to customers through software,” said Sanjay Mirchandani (pictured), chief executive officer of Puppet. “Automation makes world-class application delivery straightforward for every enterprise, not just for companies born in the cloud. Together with Distelli, we are bringing a comprehensive solution for orchestrating and automating the entire software delivery lifecycle, from infrastructure, all the way up through containers.”
The acquisition also means Puppet strengthens its presence in the Kubernetes ecosystem, which is the most popular container orchestrating platform. Distelli offers a Kubernetes dashboard that lets users organize development workflows by moving code from a version control hub such as Github to a Kubernetes cluster. From there, users can schedule the deployment of containers across multiple servers.
Puppet said it will bring all of Distelli’s products into its own portfolio of offerings. Meanwhile, Distelli will continue to serve its existing customers while its employees will move into Puppet’s offices in Seattle. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
