Exponential growth, new regulations make data governance a business priority

Data is an important component of any modern business plan, but while data is powerful, it’s also heavy. Not only must organizations store that data on physical hardware systems managed through virtualized software, there’s more data coming in every day. This incredible data growth threatens to overwhelm companies.

“I think the primary problem that organizations are still trying to fight off is exponential data growth,” said Zachary Bosin (pictured, left), director of solutions marketing, information governance, at Veritas Technologies LLC.

Bosin and his colleague, Anna Simpson (pictured, right), distinguished systems engineer at Veritas Technologies, spoke with Dave Vellante (@dvellante) and Stu Miniman (@stu), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE’s mobile livestreaming studio, during this week’s Veritas Vision conference in Las Vegas. Data governance helps tame the tide

According to research released by Veritas, data growth since last year has accelerated by 49 percent. This issue is also being magnified by adding the cloud and multicloud networks to traditional storage in on-premises data centers. Because of this, data governance has become vital to companies that need to collect, use and control data, according to Bosin and Simpson.

Veritas knows this and talks to customers around the world about data governance. In particular, companies are interested in risk mitigation and data privacy. New regulations, such as the General Data Protection Regulation in the EU, that aim to enforce data privacy are also a concern. Many businesses are turning to outside help in order to comply with these rules, Bosin and Simpson explained.

“In terms of approach, we have a ‘wheel’ that attacks different parts of the GDPR and steps you through the sort of processes that you need to be compliant,” Simpson said. From a business perspective, Veritas is tying some of its products to those processes. There is also a services component to help maintain compliance.

The first step in governing data is to map it out. Companies must know what they have and where it lives. People need new cloud-aware mapping tools to get the job done, Bosin stated. “That really gives organizations better visibility into where risk may be hiding and allows you to shine that light and interrogate data in ways you couldn’t do previously,” Bosin concluded.
