BIG DATA

Hitachi Vantara takes on ‘storm of data’ with a software focus

Before its acquisition by Hitachi Data Systems Corp., Pentaho Corp. was just beginning to scratch the surface of the “internet of things” and machine-generated data. Six months into the initiation of its joint venture, the team is at the center of internet of things orchestrating data for clients with the combined powers of Pentaho’s analytics capabilities and Hitachi’s infrastructure experience.

“Hitachi Vantara is now a new company focused around software. … As part of that bigger organization … we’re part of this bigger portfolio of products that we have access to,” said Donna Prlich (pictured), chief product officer, Pentaho, of Hitachi Vantara.

Prlich spoke with Dave Vellante (@dvellante) and James Kobielus (@jameskobielus), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the PentahoWorld event in Orlando, Florida. They discussed Pentaho’s growth in its role as partner to Hitachi, as well as what’s next for Hitachi Vantara. (* Disclosure below.)

Machine-generated data on the rise

Pentaho 8.0, the latest version of Hitachi Vantara’s data integration and analytics software, leverages Hitachi’s experience in storage and infrastructure for first time on the Pentaho platform. Prlich and her team hope to address client needs around data volume, maximizing processing resources, and removing the issues of surpassing server capacity.

“This is a great way for us to pull in a lot of the capabilities needed to go after those types of opportunities and solve those challenges,” Prlich said.

Hitachi Vantara’s goal is to make the data prep experience faster and easier for its clients, who show no signs of slowing in their data consumption. In the past year, the company has seen more than 100 percent growth in customers leveraging machine-generated data with existing data sets to contextualize results. These data-driven needs have been the primary motivator in Pentaho’s push toward innovation.

“It’s sort of this perfect storm of the amount of data that’s coming in from IoT and the availability of machine learning, and the data is really what’s driving all of that,” Prlich said.

Looking ahead, Hitachi Vantara is focused on creating software that is enterprise ready and taking full advantage of emerging tech for clients. Prlich is confident the Pentaho’s partnership with Hitachi will ensure stability and growth for both entities, as well as customers.

“The great thing is that as part of Hitachi Vantara now, we’ll be able to do more of that because we have access to the portfolio,” she concluded.
