CloudPassage adds new tools to plug leaky software containers

Cloud infrastructure security specialist CloudPassage Inc. is attempting to plug leaky software containers with the latest update to its Halo platform, which provides security controls across data centers, private and public clouds and virtual machines.

The company today announced general availability of Container Secure, which provides a range of compliance and security controls for container users.

Software containers are one of the hottest technologies around at the moment. Popular with developers, they provide a platform for new software creation that abstracts away the underlying hardware, enabling applications to be built once and run on any kind of infrastructure and operating system. They also enable faster application development and continuous delivery, allowing developers to push out more frequent updates than are possible with more traditional development methods.

But security has been a constant thorn in the side of containers, cited by numerous studies as one of the major roadblocks to further adoption. Now, CloudPassage is trying to address those concerns with Container Secure, which it says is the first security tool that secures all three aspects of software containers: container images, the running of containers and the container host.

“CloudPassage Halo was purpose-built for highly automated application development and deployment environments,” said Amit Gupta, vice president of product at CloudPassage. “With the rapid adoption of containers, the need for a single security and compliance platform that can protect both hosts and containers has become a critical ask from our customers, and we are now able to deliver with Container Secure.”

Container Secure is being offered as part of CloudPassage’s Halo security platform. The offering covers host security, continuous image assurance, configuration assessment, visibility and compliance and DevOps ecosystem integration. The company says it helps to provide efficient, automated security for containers, their hosts and virtual machines.

Cloud Secure has already secured the endorsement of some technology experts, who say there’s a growing need among developers to secure containers before deploying them into production.

“With Container Secure, CloudPassage is providing robust automated security for every stage and level of container applications expanding protection across workload types for unified host-based security,” said Doug Cahill, a senior analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group.
