Data protection unicorn Rubrik Inc. today expanded its product portfolio with a new cloud-based platform designed to help organizations better manage the information scattered throughout their networks.
Dubbed Polaris, the offering is pitched as a “single system of record across all business information.” It aims to address a data management challenge that Rubrik attributes to the growing adoption of cloud computing in the enterprise.
As companies move more workloads to platforms such as Amazon Web Services, the startup pointed out, they find themselves in a position where their information is spread out across a growing number of locations. That can make it difficult to keep track of data effectively, which creates security risks. Lacking visibility into the whereabouts of important records also introduces potential legal issues into the picture, particularly when it comes to regulatory compliance.
Rubrik said Polaris includes a “global content catalog” for keeping tabs on an organization’s information across data centers and public clouds. The platform also includes a search tool for finding specific records, plus a workflow orchestration engine that can help with carrying out administrative tasks.
Polaris’ features are exposed via application programming interfaces to facilitate the creation of custom services. The first service that Rubrik is making available to customers, called Polaris GPS, provides a visual dashboard for monitoring a company’s applications, along with the records they contain.
According to the startup, Polaris GPS is designed to help large enterprises quickly pinpoint potential issues within their environments and prioritize what to tackle first. The tool also makes it possible to log data usage for demonstrating that a company meets any service-level agreements it may be required to uphold. Organizations that require more advanced features can use Polaris’ APIs to build their own services atop the platform.
The introduction of Polaris comes as Rubrik may be quietly preparing for an initial public offering. Just a few weeks ago, the company hired Murray Demo, a veteran finance executive who played a lead role in the IPO of collaboration giant Atlassian Corp. Plc, as its first chief financial officer.
