BIG DATA

This data platform is cloud-scale, replicated and live

In the terminology of enterprise computing, there are plenty of ways to describe data. There’s hot data that is accessed via fast storage, cold data obtained through slower storage, and real-time data, generally viewed as information delivered immediately after collection. Now WANdisco Inc. has provided another addition to the lexicon: live data.

“This is more than itty-bitty data or big data,” said Jagane Sundar (pictured), chief technology officer of WANdisco. “This is cloud-scale data located in multiple regions around the world and changing all the time.”

Sundar spoke with Stu Miniman (@stu), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, at the AWS Summit event in San Francisco. They discussed how WANdisco’s platform accommodates multiple cloud providers and customer movement away from a purely on-premises model. (* Disclosure below.)

New deal with Microsoft Azure

WANdisco’s live data platform transfers data across environments without downtime or data loss, according to Sundar. The platform is compatible with multiple cloud providers, including Amazon Web Services Inc. and Microsoft Azure. In March, the company announced an agreement to package its Fusion platform with Azure’s cloud services and tools.

“If you want [data] to be accessible from multiple data centers, be available in a data center or entire region failure, then you go with our live data platform,” Sundar explained. “You can write to your on-premises storage; you can write to your cloud bucket at the same time. We’ll keep it consistent and replicate it.”

WANdisco’s live data platform seeks to capitalize on demand for data replication and the need among customers to access information on-prem or in the cloud. And the cloud seems to have the current momentum.

“I cannot name a single customer of ours who is not thinking about the cloud,” Sundar said. “On-premises does not appear to be on a growth path for them.”
