Oracle Corp. today is making a free tool available that people can use to keeps tabs on the health of the web.
Available for anyone to use, Oracle’s Internet Intelligence Map constantly tracks the state of the Internet in real-time, allowing people to see how events such as cyberattacks and natural disasters impact on connectivity in different parts of the world.
It was created by the company’s Internet Intelligence Team, which provides insight and analysis on the state of global Internet infrastructure. That team, well-known for posting updates and analysis on the state of the web, said it’s now offering its analytics capabilities to everyone via the new map.
“The internet is the world’s most important network, yet it is incredibly volatile,” said Kyle York, vice president of product strategy for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and the general manager for its Dyn Global Business Unit. “Disruptions on the internet can affect companies, governments, and network operators in profound ways. As a result, all of these stakeholders need better visibility into the health of the global internet. With this offering, we are delivering on our commitment to making it a better, more stable experience for all who rely on it.”
Oracle’s map draws its data from Border Gateway Protocols that are used to route information across the web, as well as traceroutes, which are diagnostic tools for displaying the path and measuring transit delays of packets across an internet protocol. It also gathers data on Domain Name System query volumes.
The company said these are the three most critical metrics for gauging Internet connectivity. Combined, they present an accurate picture of its current status.
“It’s important to have a global view of the internet in order to understand how external events prevent users from reaching your web-based applications and services, said Jim Davis, founder and principal analyst of Edge Research Group. “It is only when you have this insight that you can work around those issues to improve availability and performance.”
