BIG DATA

Data platform promises streamlined integration of enterprise data silos

Like the economic revolutions spurred on by advancements in oil production and the development of highways, digital transformation is being pushed forward by the mass of data surging from connected devices. As businesses grapple with the challenges of modernizing processes to accommodate rapidly growing data stockpiles, information technology support companies like Hortonworks Inc. are developing new solutions to meet the increasing demand.

“Data really is the wealth creator of this century, and so that creates a very nerve-wracking environment,” said Scott Gnau (pictured), chief technology officer of Hortonworks. “It also creates an environment of very agile and very important technological breakthroughs that enable those things to be turned into wealth.”

Gnau spoke with Rebecca Knight (@knightrm) and James Kobielus (@jameskobielus), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the DataWorks Summit in San Jose, California. They discussed the latest release from Hortonworks, Hadoop Data Platform 3.0, or HDP 3.0, and how the platform is helping enterprises fully leverage data capabilities. (* Disclosure below.)

The complete data package

The new HDP 3.0 platform was designed to address issues around managing large, disparate data sets in organizations balancing processes in the hybrid cloud. The system goes beyond the edge processing that’s now table stakes in enterprise data management and innovates further through the deep analysis carried out by new algorithms.

“That’s really where we’ve been with our Hortonworks data flow … the complete package of managing data from origination at the edge all the way through analytic to decision,” Gnau said.

HDP 3.0’s container first approach seeks to more effectively leverage the capabilities of a distributed enterprise environment for greater agility in application deployment in multi-tenancy environments. Gnau is confident the platform will provide a huge value for enterprise customers.

“I don’t have to wait till next year to upgrade my enterprise software stack to take advantage of this new algorithm. I can simply isolate it inside of a container, have it run … and get the answer right. … The only way we can do things faster is in fact to be able to provide this,” he concluded.
