Backed by $10M, Serverless intros a platform for managing serverless apps

Serverless Inc., a startup with a central role in the accelerating technology trend after which it’s named, today introduced a new offering to bring more enterprises into the fold.

Serverless computing is a model of running applications that expands upon the original idea behind the cloud. On top of freeing up companies from managing hardware, it also removes the need for a great deal of code. Developers can write boilerplate-free snippets called functions to specify what tasks to perform.

Amazon Web Services Inc. brought the serverless model into the mainstream when it launched its Lambda service in 2014, and the other major cloud providers have since introduced their own competing offerings. San Francisco-based Serverless offers an open-source framework that provides a single interface for using those different services.

The startup’s new platform, aptly called the Serverless Platform, is a commercial offering built atop the framework. Whereas the open-source version focuses only on building and deploying serverless applications, the new offering also provides features to help with day-to-day management after deployment.

Serverless Platform’s value-added capabilities come from the startup’s two existing commercial products. One is Event Gateway, a tool that enables companies to link serverless functions they have running in a service such as Lambda with the rest of their infrastructure. That includes other cloud environments and “internet of things” devices, among other systems.

Serverless Dashboard, the other component, is a monitoring console. It enables users to visualize how workloads depend on one another and check error logs for potential problems. Moreover, the console doubles as a kind of collaboration environment where members of a team can work together on new serverless applications.

There could be a potentially big market for the Serverless Platform. The startup claimed that its open-source framework was used to perform more than 8 million deployments across the leading public clouds last year. Serverless’ users include big names such as The Coca-Cola Co., Nordstrom Inc. and Expedia Inc. to name a few.

The startup said that its new commercialization push is supported by $10 million in fresh funding. The round, led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, brings Serverless’ total raised to $13 million.
