Snap takes another stab at camera glasses with new Spectacles versions
Despite a failed strategy to sell camera sunglasses, Snap Inc. is taking a shot it with two new versions of its Spectacles glasses.
The new glasses announced today, oddly named Nico and Veronica, are black-on-black with polarized lenses, which Snap claimed “effortlessly combine form and function to create our most fashionable hands-free camera.”
Based on Spectacles Version 2.0 launched in April, the new glasses offer an aesthetic update with the same technology underneath. Described as allowing “70 videos or hundreds of photos on a single charge” with support for wireless transfers to a mobile device, the glasses are equipped with a small, lightweight camera with a field of view of 105 degrees and can record 1216-by-1216-pixel video at 60 frames per second with a touch of a button on the left side.
The original Spectacles launched with a lot of self-created fanfare in September 2016, but by October 2017 it was revealed that they’d been a flop. A report claimed that the company “grossly overestimated demand” and was sitting on “hundreds of thousands of unsold units sitting in warehouses, either fully assembled or in parts.”
Snap has never officially released sales numbers for the glasses, but at one point it was claimed that it had sold 150,000 of the original model. Another figure mentioned but not confirmed put sales at 220,000 units.

How many units of the new model have been sold also remains a mystery, but Snap claimed usage levels are up 40 percent. It’s a nice number to use in a media release that means nothing without having a baseline figure to start from.
The more “stylish” sunglasses, praised by some in the tech press as the first video glasses released by Snap that actually look wearable, are more like regular sunglasses. But they don’t come cheap, with this model being offered for $199. They’re available via the Snap store now to customers in the U.S. and Europe and will be offered in Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom retail outlets later in the year.
