Software testing automation company mabl lands $20M funding round

Automated software testing startup mabl Inc. is setting its sights on the enterprise after landing a $20 million round of funding led by GV, formerly Google Ventures, with participation from existing investors CRV and Amplify Partners.

In addition to the Series B round, mabl is also launching a new enterprise-grade version of its platform called “mabl Enterprise” that comes with premium features designed to meet the unique demands of large organizations.

Mabl has created tools that use machine learning to automate functional testing for developers and make the whole process as easy as possible. It’s aimed at enterprises and other developers that use DevOps and continuous integration/continuous deployment practices to roll out faster updates to their business applications.

Functional testing is the process of testing the front end of applications. Previously, it has been a tedious and time-consuming task that had to be done manually to ensure the app runs without any glitches.

The problem mabl is trying to solve is that though DevOps and CI/CD methodologies have helped to speed up the task of writing and deploying new code, the manual testing process creates a bottleneck that prevents new software releases from being deployed more rapidly.

Mabl uses machine learning, a branch of artificial intelligence, to automate this testing to speed this part of the process up. As a result, developers only have to show the software the workflow they want to test and Mabl will do it for them. It will perform those tests and even adapts to the smallest of user interface modifications. Mabl is able to detect things such as bugs, errors in JavaScript, visual changes, broken links and many other potential problems.

The company said it’s planning to use the funds from the new round to “accelerate innovation” in order to make it easier to use its platform at an “enterprise scale.” The company will also invest in its go-to-market and customer success organizations.

The new mabl Enterprise version, which is a third tier above its “Essentials” and “Pro” versions, is designed to help teams at larger organizations maintain the quality and velocity of their software releases at scale, while ensuring compliance and security. It comes with premium features including mabl Link, which enables developers to test applications within private networks and on local machines. It also offers “native cross-browser testing” and “Security Assertion Markup Language integration,” which enables the integration of popular single sign-on services such as Okta.

“At its core, mabl uses the power of cloud computing, data analytics and machine learning to make testing easier,” said mabl co-founder Dan Belcher. “The value of mabl’s intent-driven automation framework, auto-healing tests and anomaly detection, increase exponentially in larger, more complex environments.”
