EMERGING TECH

With massive lineup of Echo devices, Amazon aims to take Alexa everywhere

Three days after word leaked that Amazon.com Inc. is preparing to expand its family of Echo smart speakers, the new products are officially here — in spades.

At an event in Seattle this morning, the company unveiled more than a dozen additions to the lineup that could help significantly expand its presence in the home and beyond. The devices include heavily upgraded versions of popular existing speakers, as well as a collection of entirely new Echo gadgets ranging from a microwave to a cloud-connected car add-on.

The flurry of new products signals a bid by Amazon to embed its artificial intelligence-powered Alexa smart assistant into every nook and cranny of the consumer electronics world. Voice navigation is becoming an increasingly important mode of interaction with electronic devices.

At the same time, voice interfaces require steadily more sophisticated machine learning technologies, a development that means Amazon must keep pace with other AI leaders ranging from Google LLC and Facebook Inc. to Microsoft Corp. and IBM Corp. The announcements also come as Amazon’s flagship smart speakers face increasingly credible competition from Google, Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and others.

Here’s the main product lineup Amazon announced:

New Echo Dot and Echo Plus

Amazon has pulled back the curtains on a new version of the miniature Echo Dot, its most popular smart speaker, that promises clearer sound with 70 percent higher maximum volume. The built-in microphone is touted as better as well. All this upgraded gear will ship in a streamlined case featuring a fabric cover and softer edges.

The Echo Dot is joined by an upgraded Echo Plus, Amazon’s main entry in smart home hubs. Amazon has added a temperature sensor that will enable Alexa to interact with other devices in new ways. For example, a user could ask the assistant to turn on the fan when the room gets too hot.

The Echo Dot and Echo Plus will cost $50 and $150, respectively, when they launch next month, the same as the previous models.

Streamlined Echo Show

Amazon is launching a new version of the Echo Show, the Alexa-powered smart screen it originally introduced last May, with a 10-inch display twice as big as the one in the original. The other major hardware enhancement is the inclusion of new speakers situated on the sides rather than the front. And in the software department, Amazon has carried over the smart home hub capabilities from the Echo Plus.

The Echo Show will start shipping next month for $230.

A smart speaker with no speaker

The first of the new Echo form factors that Amazon introduced today is the Echo Input. It’s a device even smaller than the Echo Dot, standing barely half an inch tall, that’s designed to connect to a standalone speaker via a card or Bluetooth. It will go on sale for $40 later this year.

Echo Auto

The other new devices rolling out alongside the Echo Input represent an even bigger departure from Amazon’s core smart speaker line. One, the Echo Auto, even extends the product family behind the confines of the user’s home. It’s a rectangular device that can be placed on a vehicle’s dashboard and plugged into the infotainment system to bring up Alexa.

The Echo Auto’s debut comes just a day after Google LLC teamed up with Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, the world’s largest automaker alliance, to make Google Assistant available in vehicles. Amazon has lined up an impressive partner roster of its own.  The company said that Ford Motor Co., BMW and Toyota Motor Corp. are among the automakers currently working to add support for the Echo Auto to their vehicles.

The Echo Auto will become available on a limited basis later this year for $50.

Echo Wall Clock, microwave and DVR

Most of the remaining new products are companion devices designed to be used alongside one of the core Echo speakers. There’s the Echo Wall Clock, which can set alarms based on voice commands and will retail for $29. There’s also the $60 AmazonBasics Microwave offers integration with the Dash Replenishment Service. As a result, users can use Alexa not only to set the timer but also order ingredients from Amazon when their supplies are running low.

The two gadgets are rolling out alongside a trio of audio devices. The main highlight is the Amazon Echo Sub, a subwoofer that can be paired with up to two Echo speakers. It’s joined by a pair of stereo amplifiers called the Echo Link and the Echo Link Amp, which can be combined with the former device to create a voice-activated home audio setup much like what newly public Sonos Inc. offers.

The Echo Sub will become available next month for $130 while the Link and Link Amp are slated to launch early next year with a price of $200 and $300, respectively.

Another addition to the consumer electronics lineup: Fire TV Recast, a digital video recorder for over-the-air broadcasts, which can be recorded and streamed to other devices. Two models priced at $230 and $280, requiring a Fire TV stick and an HDTV antenna, will be available Nov. 14.
