Adobe beefs up Acrobat DC with new mobile and AI features

Two and a half decades after its release, more than 100 million people use Adobe Systems Inc.’s Acrobat DC family of PDF tools every day. The company today released new capabilities for the suite to make all those users’ work go more smoothly.

The enhancement that will likely be felt the most is the suite’s expanded mobile support. The Acrobat DC apps, which were previously geared mainly toward viewing and signing documents, now provide a much more complete set of editing features.

Adobe has augmented the enterprise-oriented, paid Acrobat Pro DC version of the suite’s PDF reader with tablet-friendly editing options based on the ones in the desktop edition. Users can change the text and formatting of a document, as well add images with the option of making ad hoc adjustments such as rotating a photo. The features are becoming available on both the iOS and Android apps.

The expanded mobile support is joined by improvements focused on more specific aspects of the document editing workflow. A new feature powered by Adobe’s Sensei artificial intelligence technology offers suggestions on how to fill form fields, while the Adobe Sign electronic signature service has been built directly into Acrobat Pro DC.

The latter enhancement mainly targets business users who regularly share documents with peers. According to Adobe, the new Acrobat Pro DC offers a “completely redesigned and simplified” way to send documents for signing, which was already fairly straightforward before thanks to an existing integration Adobe Sign. It’s part of a broader set of changes specifically targeted at Acrobat DC’s sizable enterprise user base.

The other major highlight on this front is the redesign of Acrobat DC’s Home View dashboard for tracking documents and outstanding tasks. Users can now check if the colleagues to whom they sent a document for review or signing have opened it, as well as set up notifications to remind them to do so in case they haven’t.

The updates are generally available today for users with a subscription to Acrobat DC or Adobe’s Creative Cloud.
