Cloud security-as-a-service startup Arctic Wolf lands $45M Series C round

Cybersecurity startup Arctic Wolf Networks Inc. is cashing in on enterprises’ fears of becoming the next high-profile hacking victim, raising $45 million in a new round of funding.

Future Fund led the Series C investment in the Sunnyvale, California-based company, which sells a security operations center-as-a-service, bringing the company’s total amount raised to $91.2 million. New investors Admans Street and Unusual Ventures joined in, as well as existing investors such as Lightspeed Venture Partners, Redpoint Ventures, Sonae Investment Management and Knollwood Investment Advisory LLC.

Arctic Wolf’s cloud-based security operations center gives companies an easy way to detect potential threats within their information technology networks and systems. The core component of its platform is its threat detection software, which analyzes organizations’ data to identify any possible issues. The results of this analysis are then sent to Arctic Wolf’s specialist security team, rather than to the customer, in order for any anomalies to be thoroughly investigated.

Arctic Wolf said its engineers dig into the data to uncover potential signs of a breach, as well as vulnerable systems that may leave an organization exposed to attack. Should any issues be detected, the details are displayed on a customer-facing dashboard so that it can take action to remedy the problem.

The company said the human expertise paired with its platform saves internal network protection teams the trouble of manually sifting through raw security logs for breach indicators. That can free them up to focus on other tasks and potentially reduce the chance of something slipping through the cracks.

Arctic Wolf isn’t the only SOC-as-a-service provider in town. Rival Proficio Inc. offers a similar kind of service, but Arctic Wolf Chief Executive Brian NeSmith told SiliconANGLE that his company distinguishes itself in several ways.

“[We offer] concierge security teams that are named to specific customers, understand that customer environment, and provide custom security and services,” NeSmith said. “We also provide broad monitoring to ingest any log source on-premises, monitor at the network ingress/egress, as well as monitor cloud environments, and we offer predictable subscription pricing to satisfy budget requirements.”

Arctic Wolf reckons its service has been widely received in the enterprise, citing average year-over-year customer growth of 219 percent since its launch in 2012. The company has doubled its workforce in the past 12 months in order to support this expansion, and with the new funding, it said it’s plotting further growth initiatives.

“In addition to supporting continued company growth, the funding will accelerate expansion of our service offering, as we continue to scale and expand to meet our customers’ individualized needs,” said NeSmith.
