Mesosphere makes Kubernetes and Jupyter Notebooks available as a service

Data center operating system provider Mesosphere Inc. is updating its platform in a new release today that makes Kubernetes and Jupyter Notebooks available “as a service” for the first time.

Mesosphere shot to fame around five years ago with the launch of its Data Center Operating System, or DC/OS, which is based on the open-source Apache Mesos project. The idea behind Mesos is to enable data centers to be virtualized at a massive scale, presenting them to users as one big computer and therefore making them easier to manage.

The company has seen some significant success to date, counting the likes of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., Yelp Inc., Tommy Hilfiger Corp. and Deutsche Telekom as customers. Most recently, it landed a huge $125 million funding round in May that should help it compete with companies such as Amazon Web Services Inc. and Red Hat Inc., which provide similar data center infrastructure services.

With the release of DC/OS 1.12, the company is adding a new Mesosphere Kubernetes Engine and a Mesosphere Jupyter Service to its platform.

Kubernetes is the most popular orchestration tool for managing software containers, which are used to build applications that can run on any computer platform without their code being changed. With MKE, it becomes much easier to provision, manage and scale Kubernetes on bare metal, cloud and virtualized information technology environments.

Jupyter Notebooks are web-based applications that allow developers to create and share documents containing live code, equations, visualizations and other data. They’re used for a range of coding purposes, including data cleaning and transformation, statistical modeling, data visualization and machine learning.

The idea behind the MJS service is that data scientists and engineers can use Jupyter Notebooks to innovate faster. Using Jupyter Notebooks, data science teams gain instant access to an interactive data science development environment that’s preconfigured with everything they need to start building new machine learning models.

“Companies need to move fast to stay relevant in today’s competitive landscape,” Florian Leibert, Mesosphere’s chief executive officer, said in a statement. “To do this, IT teams are leveraging leading tools such as Kubernetes, Jupyter Notebooks, and advanced security and software registries to drive software innovation. By natively integrating Kubernetes and Jupyter into DC/OS, we’re able to deliver fast deployment and centralized management for businesses to readily adopt the latest enterprise technologies and standards.”
