Hyundai invests in Israeli deep learning computer vision startup allegro.ai

Carmaker Hyundai Motor Company today said it has made a strategic investment in allegro.ai, an Israeli startup that is developing a deep learning computer vision platform, through its investment arm Hyundai CRADLE.

The amount of the deal was not disclosed. As part of the deal, allegro.ai technology will be used to improve the quality of Hyundai’s products including its self-driving cars. Founded in 2016, allegro.ai offers a deep learning lifecycle management solution focused on deep learning as it applies to computer vision.

“Computer vision can be used in an extremely wide range of uses, from understanding the results of medical examinations and clinical trials, through finding defaults in manufactured products (visual quality control), spotting guns, to creating better solutions in smart cities, retail, security, health, robotics and many other fields,” a spokesperson for allegro.ai said in an email. “As a result, we cannot get AI right till we get computer vision right. And the most quick, effective and cost-effective way to create and implement computer vision solutions is through the use of deep learning.”

While the technology has a broad range of potential uses, it’s especially applicable in areas such autonomous vehicles, drones, security and logistics, some of which are further along the development cycle than others but all of which are predicted to be massive markets in the near future.

This is the point where allegro.ai enters the picture with an AI product life-cycle management solution focused on computer vision. The company said its platform simplifies the process of developing and managing deep learning-powered solutions create products that continue to learn after they are deployed in the field.

Prior to the investment by Hyundai, allegro.ai had raised $11 million. Investors include MizMaa Ventures, Samsung Catalyst Fund, Robert Bosch Venture Capital and Dynamic Loop Capital.
