iPaaS 2.0 is erasing most of the IT task list

Integration platform as a service, or iPaaS, had a major growth spurt in the last few years. It now towers over niche platform as a service offerings that cover only one area, such as “internet of things.” It stretches across the entire enterprise — at least the latest iteration of the Dell Boomi iPaaS does; its users are cutting complexity every way but loose and racing projects through the finish line, according to Chris McNabb (pictured), chief executive officer of Dell Boomi.

“Information technology departments that have a list of 50 things to do can now have a list of ten things to do,” McNabb said. Suddenly all the progressive digital-transformation projects the business wants to try are actually doable. “We can turn them from a department of people who say ‘no,’ to a department that says, ‘yes,’ to the business.”

The iPaaS isn’t just good for integration of, say, on-premise infrastructure with cloud. It’s all kinds of integrations, and more, McNabb said. The breadth of iPaaS now encompasses automation, workflow orchestration, low-code capabilities for app developers, master data management, machine learning and artificial intelligence. “They are now complete enterprise middleware solutions that are offered up as a service,” he said. “That net effect will dramatically reduce the workload on integration engineers.”

McNabb spoke with Lisa Martin (@LisaMartinTV) and John Furrier (@furrier), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the Dell Boomi World event in Las Vegas. They discussed how customers are curing integration headaches and increasing business agility with enterprise iPaas. (* Disclosure below.)

iPaas knows how to push integration buttons

A single, broad platform as a service is preferable to a bunch of narrow ones, because users learn a single way to program across all areas, according to McNabb. “No matter what kind of integration you want to be able to do, there’s one way to do it,” he said.

Dell Boomi is cloud-native and upgrades 11 times a year. “When I see some of my vendors sending out these two- and three-page sets of documentation on what the customer needs to do to upgrade from version 3 to version 4, I shudder,” McNabb said. Dell Boomi iPasS customers don’t do upgrades themselves, period.

To integrate technologies, it leverages metadata and immediately maps system A to system B, even for brand new users. “With one click and within 30 seconds, I can get you a working integration.”

IPaaS users find they cut development times by 70 percent, according to McNabb. They get more chances earlier in the game to pivot, change direction and tweak projects. “Those decision points result in agile nimbleness for people’s business.”
