Sauce Labs unveils cloud-based scalable headless browser testing solution for web DevOps

Sauce Labs Inc., maker of automated continuous testing solutions for DevOps processes, today announced a cloud-based testing solution for web development the company calls an industry first.

With the unveiling of Sauce Headless, DevOps and developer teams can introduce code for testing much earlier in the development cycle. That means that component code, such as for individual functions or logic segments, can pass through testing long before the code is ready for final deployment.

Headless testing is a test method that involves launching a copy of a web browser without the user interface. That reduces a great deal of the overhead needed to run the browser and provides a lightweight mechanism for testing the code. As a result, Sauce Headless can deploy a large number of Chrome or Firefox browsers into the cloud and run unit tests on the code at scale.

“The testing landscape has changed dramatically in the last year, thanks in large part to the movement to shift testing to earlier in the development pipeline,” said Lubos Parobek, vice president of product at Sauce Labs. “Catching bugs earlier reduces costs, improves quality and increases developer productivity.”

According to the latest developer survey from Stack Overflow, 85 percent of respondents now use DevOps and agile software development practices. This cultural shift in software development practices has led to a rise in the need for continuous automated testing across the entire process from the beginning to right before release.

The same survey revealed that most developers, over 60 percent, check their code multiple times a day. Having a tool that automates those checks would save such developers time and headaches.

“Sauce Headless… will allow developers to test on every commit,” Parobek said. “Combining this industry-first headless solution with our industry-leading cross-browser and mobile app testing makes Sauce Labs the most comprehensive continuous testing cloud available.”

Sauce Headless provides headless Chrome and Firefox browsers on Linux using a container-based infrastructure to build the test environment atop any cloud system. The solution delivers a method for rapidly testing every commit using lightweight early testing to uncover bugs quickly and often while also ensuring that web applications are compatible across all relevant platforms.

Sauce Labs claims that it’s the first to market with a cloud-based headless testing grid that allows developers to get nearly instant feedback on a massive scale and all without the need to manage a cumbersome internal infrastructure.

“The introduction of Sauce Headless allows us to get test results more quickly and ensure stable code earlier in the development process as we focus on creating innovative features for our customers,” said Abdur Jubair, automation engineer at leading digital marketing solutions company RentPath LLC.

RentPath deploys web applications early and often, with numerous feature updates, required to keep all of its marketing up to date and using the best possible information. As a result, the company uses Sauce Labs Continuous Testing Cloud to avoid bugs that might bewilder clients and audiences. “The Sauce Labs Continuous Testing Cloud has allowed us to delight consumers as they use our network of sites to find and enjoy their ideal home,” said Jubair.

The company also revealed the upcoming launch of a Sauce Headless public beta for enterprise customers in January. Customers interested in participating in the beta can sign up for Sauce Headless at the company’s website.
