Samsung reportedly developing 6.7-inch flagship phone with 6 cameras
A new report claims that Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. will add no fewer than four new devices to its Galaxy S smartphone lineup next year, including a supersized flagship dubbed “Beyond X.”
The Wall Street Journal today cited sources as saying the model will feature a massive 6.7-inch screen. For comparison, the current-generation Galaxy S9 Plus sports a 6.2-inch display. The Beyond X would even be bigger than the company’s Galaxy Note 9 phablet, which measures 6.4 inches across.
The extra-large display is just one of the standout features Samsung is expected to introduce with the device. The sources cited in today’s report said it will also feature six cameras: two on the front and four on the back.
Samsung and some competitors have recently started experimenting with increasing the number of cameras on their devices. The electronics giant included five in one of its latest smartphones, the midrange Galaxy A9 that debuted last month. It stands to reason that the company might want to go even further with its next top-end device in a bid to rekindle consumers’ stagnating enthusiasm for new phone releases.
In addition to the supersized screen and extra cameras, Beyond X will reportedly feature support for 5G wireless technology. Carrier networks based on the 5G standard are expected to deliver 10 to 100 times faster connectivity when they start coming online early next year.
Samsung is said to be in talks with AT&T Inc., T-Mobile US Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc. about supporting the device. It has reportedly also been negotiating with carriers in its home country of South Korea. Since 5G adoption is still at an early stage, Beyond X is expected to launch later than the three other Galaxy S10 devices that the company was previously reported to be planning for next year.
The sources who spoke with the Journal said they expect Samsung to debut the four phones as early as mid-February. They also took the opportunity to share new information about the three smaller Galaxy S10 models set to debut alongside the Beyond X. Apparently, the devices are expected to range in size from 5.8 inches to 6.4 inches and feature between three and five cameras.
Samsung is said to be still weighing whether or not to equip the trio with a mechanism for wirelessly charging other devices. And another detail that has apparently not yet been finalized is the name of the experimental foldable tablet that the company previewed earlier this month. According to the tipsters, Samsung is looking at bringing the final version to market under the brand “Galaxy Flex.”
