Pivot3 automates data protection for hyperconverged infrastructures

Hyperconverged infrastructure company Pivot3 Inc. today said it’s adding new policy-based security capabilities to its platform, with an aim to help its users to automate the process of protecting sensitive data.

Pivot3’s Intelligence Engine is a hyperconverged infrastructure platform that integrates data center resources such as compute, storage and virtualization into a single system, so they can be more easily managed via a single toolset.

One of the company’s central aims is to unify on-premises with public cloud infrastructure. The idea is that enterprises using hybrid cloud environments can automate important tasks such as management, resource allocation, workload mobility and data placement. Customers can then enjoy better savings and more agility by choosing the most appropriate infrastructure for each workload they run.

The new policy-based security features enable users to more easily implement policies that dictate how their data is encrypted, which is an important consideration when relying on hybrid infrastructures, Pivot3 said.

Customers can now set policies for data at rest — inactive data stored in a database or storage system — at a system, volume or virtual machine level, in a way that’s compliant with the latest Federal Information Processing Standards 140-2. New key management features have also been added, so that Pivot3’s Intelligence Engine now supports the Key Management Interoperability Protocol.

These kinds of automated security capabilities are rapidly becoming “key ingredients” for organizations as they look to ward off evolving security threats and adhere to changing regulations, Tim Stammers, a senior analyst at 451 Research Inc., said in a statement. “By adding policy-based security management features to its Intelligence Engine, Pivot3 is simplifying the process of protecting sensitive and mission-critical data and enabling customers to progress toward a software-defined data center.”

Pivot3 said the new features announced today will become available before the end of the year.
