Apple will let veterans access health records from their iPhones

Apple Inc. announced Monday that it’s partnering with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to allow veterans to access their health care records via the iPhone Health Records app.

Some 9 million veterans that have received care from the VA will now be able to see what treatment they’ve received, diagnoses, immunizations, lab tests and medications they’ve been given. The information is secured with encryption and protected by the iPhone user’s passcode, Touch ID or Face ID.

To this date, Apple has already established a number of partnerships with hospitals whose data is accessible through the company’s Health Records software. Last year, Apple announced it was partnering with more than 100 hospitals and 39 healthcare systems, but with 9 million people on the books across 1,243 facilities, the VA is the largest healthcare system in the U.S.

This could be good news for people who feel they want more access to their medical information in one place. This week the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced new rules that would promote such easy access.

“These proposed rules strive to bring the nation’s healthcare system one step closer to a point where patients and clinicians have the access they need to all of a patient’s health information, helping them in making better choices about care and treatment,” said HHS Secretary Alex Azar.

It seems Apple is on the frontline, and while some healthcare groups may have implemented technology that allows people to see their medial records, Apple is putting various systems into one app. “Our goal is to empower people to better understand and improve their health, enabling them to view their medical information from multiple providers in one place easily and securely,” said Kevin Lynch, Apple’s vice president of technology.
