Mendix integrates its low code app development platform with SAP HANA

Low-code application development platform provider Mendix Inc. is warming up to SAP SE as it launches its Spring 2019 update.

With the latest release of its platform as a service today, Mendix said, users can now choose to deploy apps built using its tools to the SAP HANA database and take full advantage of its analytics capabilities and the high level performance it offers.

Mendix is one of several companies making waves in the low-code application development space. The company was founded in the Netherlands in 2006 with the idea of speeding up and simplifying the process of creating business-oriented software applications. Essentially, Mendix aims to make it easy for people with no coding skills to create new programs.

Mendix competes with other low-code development platforms such as Appian, Microsoft Corp.’s PowerApps and Salesforce.com Inc.’s Lightning. However, Mendix’s platform has a special focus on so-called “internet of things” apps, which explains why its parent company Siemens AG was willing to pay $700 million to acquire it last year.

At the time, Siemens said it would look to combine Mendix’s tools with its own MindSphere platform, which is an operating system for the IoT that connects factories and machines to data centers and analyzes data to boost the efficiency of those manufacturing systems.

The integration with SAP HANA is interesting because the database comes optimized for “high volume, high ingestion” workloads that are becoming increasingly common with IoT apps, Mendix said. For instance, SAP HANA offers extremely scalable in-memory analytics that combine online analytical processing with online transaction processing to deliver faster insights based on the data it processes. Those insights are delivered in real time via the SAP HANA Data Management Suite.

Moreover, SAP HANA offers resource sharing controls for applications hosted on public cloud infrastructure, allowing enterprises to deploy multiple Mendix-based apps to various clouds.

The integration with SAP HANA also opens the door to SAP’s wider application ecosystem, which enables developers using Mendix to create more complex apps to solve their business problems. The SAP integration is one of the many features in the new Mendix Spring ’19 release, which is being made generally available today, the company said.
