Latest product releases from Dell have a distinctly VMware flavor

Dell Technologies Inc. unveiled a host of new product announcements today at the Dell Technologies World event in Las Vegas, leaving it for analysts to dissect the technologies supporting them. VMware’s impact on the hyperconverged space appeared to be an important influence, with an expansion of hyperconverged appliances branded as VxFlex and the launch of a hybrid cloud/on-premises service called Analytical Consulting Engine, designed to enhance the performance of VxRail systems.

“The area that I spend so much time on is the hyperconverged infrastructure,” said Stu Miniman (@stu), co-host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, in his analysis of the product announcements during the second day of the Dell Tech World event. “If you look at a lot of the pieces underneath it all, it’s VxRail. VxRail itself is just dirt simple and really there.”

Miniman spoke with John Furrier (@furrier) and Dave Vellante (@dvellante), co-hosts of theCUBE. They discussed the key role of VMware in Dell’s technology roll out and the influence of Dell’s founder in the company’s strategic vision (see the full interview with transcript here). Antidote to boredom

On the heels of Monday’s news that VMware Inc. would partner with Microsoft Corp. to provide infrastructure management software on Azure, the latest product releases from Dell appeared to be positioned around VMware’s technology portfolio.

“It’s kind of a boring company without VMware,” Vellante said. “The underpinning of the multicloud strategy is VMware. In a very short timeframe, Michael Dell and his team have put these two companies together and they have aligned in a big way.”

VMware’s successful contribution to the Dell Technologies story this week appears to be a product of deft handling by company executives, most notably Michael Dell himself.

“He brought his execution mojo and ethos of Dell,” Furrier said. “This is a great example of keeping the founders around. They bring the vision, guts and grit.”
