Zscaler Inc. has an interesting message for security professionals: Don’t bother with securing the network. Worry instead about securing user access to the right applications wherever the data resides.
The company’s flagship services deliver fast, secure connections between user and application regardless of location, network or device.
“The network is an important transport, but it doesn’t need to be secure,” said Jay Chaudhry (pictured), founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Zscaler. “We’re helping transform from this old world of a hub-and-spoke network — and security is this castle and moat — to the new world where the user can go directly to the application over any network.”
Chaudhry spoke with Peter Burris (@plburris), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s studio, at theCUBE’s studio in Palo Alto, California. They discussed Zscaler’s role in serving as a critical check to verify and secure access, log creation using the services, and how the firm’s approach has been received by customers. The firm’s products, which include Zscaler Internet Access and Zscaler Private Access, are 100% cloud delivered. Chaudhry likens his company’s role to that of a check post, much as passengers are screened when they pass through international airports. And the application data is localized, not routed back to a network data center.
“It is the heavy lifting we did to make sure your policy can automatically show up where it is,” Chaudhry said. “Imagine flying from San Francisco to Chicago via Houston. It’s very painful.”
Zscaler applies the same concept to log creation as well. The Zscaler service offers real-time log consolidation across the globe.
“Any time you go through any check post, the logs are created,” Chaudhry said. “They get sent to one central logging cluster, and they are available within seconds. That’s really an example of a purpose-built security cloud.”
Major customers using Zscaler include General Electric Co., Siemens Corp. and DHL Corp., according to Chaudhry. In August, the company became the first cloud services provider to receive FedRAMP authorization for a dedicated remote access platform.
“We are having fun building this lasting company and making cloud and internet a safe place to do business,” Chaudhry concluded.
