SECURITY

Enterprise demands seamless hybrid-computing security; is SD-WAN the solution?

Enterprise security today demands not just a next-generation firewall, but intrusion detection and endpoint monitoring. As businesses migrate to a hybrid computing model comprised of on-premises and cloud operations, a solution with baked-in security that can deliver these and other key features across a complex infrastructure has genuine appeal.

The Secure SD-WAN offered by Open Systems AG is designed to allow enterprises to grow while protecting key assets in a hybrid environment.

“We think that the service platform, like the SD-WAN service platform we built, needs to be standardized on an operational level, but also from a baseline security and detection level,” said Moritz Mann (pictured), head of product management at Open Systems. “This means that if you run and create your own workloads on-premises, you need to have the same security and deployment standard for the cloud, and have this seamless security perimeter and level of security no matter where these deployments are.”

Mann spoke with John Furrier (@furrier), host of theCUBE, at SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio in Palo Alto, California. They discussed the challenges of meeting security needs across multiple platforms, how Open Systems can secure containers, and growth opportunities for his company (see the full interview with transcript here). Preparing for edge security

One of the challenges Open Systems must address is the data risk incurred when users share information across multiple platforms and devices. This has become especially worrisome as enterprise customers move into application-centric frameworks using container orchestration tools such as the Kubernetes container-orchestration system.

“We need to think of the future because if you look at Microsoft’s and AWS’ strategy, containers will eventually move back to the edge,” Mann said. “We can build a perimeter around the containment, especially in the activity logs of the different Kubernetes containers. We don’t call that any longer a WAN edge; it will become a cloud edge.”

Open Systems has recently embarked on a strategy  to strengthen its channel partner relationships with a goal of having at least 60% of its sales channel-driven by the end of this year. And the company is looking to add staff as security continues to be a major focus for enterprise businesses.

“We have a lot of open positions, exciting challenges, and a growth-oriented workspace,” Mann said. “Security at the moment is one of the hottest areas to be in, especially with all of the fundamental changes happening in the enterprise.”
