Linux attack protection startup Capsule8 raises $6.5M from Intel Capital

Linux attack protection startup Capsule8 Inc. today said it has raised $6.5 million in new funding from Intel Capital to drive a range of sales, marketing, product development and customer-facing initiatives.

Founded in 2016, Capsule8 offers an attack detection platform built for Linux production environments whether they use software containers, virtualized computers or bare-metal servers with no software pre-installed, and whether they’re deployed on-premises or in the cloud.

The company’s platform, Capsule8 Protected, is said to liberate security operations teams from managing a high volume of manual operations. It replaces multiple legacy controls with a single solution that detects and prevents exploits in real time while preserving the performance and reliability of production infrastructures.

Capsule8 Protect features an application programming interface-first architecture. The company claims it can deliver seamless technology integration that enables enterprises to capitalize on existing investments.

Last week the company launched a new offering called Investigations designed to remove the manual effort required to maintain a dedicated database just for security data – enabling customers to determine quickly what transpired in an incident. With support for Amazon Web Services Inc.’s Athena and Google LLC’s BigQuery, the service allows customers to create an on-demand database and make that data accessible for security practitioners seeking additional context about alerts and system activities.

Capsule8 customers include Lyft Inc. and Looker Data Sciences Inc.

“Containers and cloud-native security offerings solve a critical piece of the enterprise protection puzzle,” Intel Capital Managing Director Sunil Kurkure said in a statement. “While other vendors address pieces of the problem, Capsule8 addresses the urgent need organizations have for security across their entire production infrastructures.”

Including the new funding, Capsule8 has raised $30 million to date. Previous investors include ClearSky, Bessemer Venture Partners and Rain Capital.
