Cloud-native infrastructure management firm Platform9 raises $25M

Private cloud services company Platform9 Systems Inc. said today it has raised $25 million in a late-stage round of funding that brings its total amount raised to date to $61.5 million.

NGP Capital led the Series D round, which also saw participation from Mubadala Ventures and previous investors Redpoint Ventures, Menlo Ventures, Canvas Ventures and HPE Pathfinder.

Platform9 specializes in delivering managed versions of some of the most popular open-source software projects. The company began life as an OpenStack-as-a-service provider before moving into software containers with its Managed Kubernetes service.

Those services have since evolved into what the company says is the industry’s only software-as-a-service managed hybrid cloud platform. Based on Kubernetes and OpenStack, its platform enables companies to run cloud-native infrastructure at scale without worrying about the operational overhead.

“Simplifying the operational burden of delivering cloud-native infrastructure at scale across any environment is a key consideration for organizations going through digital transformation,” said Platform9 co-founder and Chief Executive Sirish Raghuram. “They are looking to leverage open-source modern technologies on top of their existing infrastructure and multi-cloud deployments, without crumbling under the complexity of managing technologies such as Kubernetes, monitoring, service mesh and more.”

Platform9 aims to remove that complexity through its Cloud Control Plane, which manages every aspect of the cloud infrastructure, including monitoring, upgrades and disaster recovery.

“This enables customers to focus on their business and adopt cloud-native in a way that’s future-proof for any environment of their choosing, without requiring additional headcount or heavy lifting from IT Ops teams,” Raghuram said.

Constellation Research Inc. analyst Holger Mueller said Platform9’s managed offerings appeal to smaller enterprises because the know-how for many of these technologies remains scarce and proven resources are hard to find.

“Doing things manually means that enterprises and their next-generation applications are dependent on the time and ability of the operations teams they have,” Mueller said. “And they may find that existing applications do not run successfully, or that code assets can’t be deployed in production. So the framework services and platform services offered by Platform9 will be welcomed by executives to ensure the success of their next-gen apps.”

The model certainly seems to have some appeal, if Platform9’s latest numbers are to be believed. The company reported revenue growth of 130% and total customer volume bookings growth of 156% in the last year, though it didn’t provide absolute numbers.

Raghuram said the company will use its new funds to expand its global sales, product and marketing teams and work on adding new features to its hybrid cloud management platform.
