Microsoft Corp. has scheduled a Surface event for Oct. 2, but in a twist on last year’s event that debuted a new Surface Pro, the possible headline launch this year could be a dual-screen Surface device.
The dual-screen fold tablet/laptop, code-named Surface “Centaurus” by Microsoft during its two years of development, could have a similar form factor to the delayed Huawei Mate X, though noticeably larger.
The Centaurus was previously rumored to run Windows Core OS, a new modern version of Windows 10 that has been designed from the ground up to support dual-screen devices and may even come with some smartphone features as well. A Microsoft patent involving a folding dual-screen device thought to be a possible Surface Phone was discovered in January 2017.
Whether Microsoft will debut the Centaurus at the reveal event is a matter of speculation, but other devices may be a little more obvious.
The event is expected to see a refresh of the Surface Laptop with the Surface Laptop 3. There some speculation that there may be an AMD variant of the device, while the Laptop 3 could also abandon the Surface Connect port seen in earlier incarnations for a USB-C port.
Surface Pro 7 is highly likely to be on the reveal list given that Microsoft tends to bring out new versions each year. Like the Surface Laptop, the device reportedly could ditch the Surface Connect port for USB-C. A version with support for LTE variant powered by Snapdragon’s 8xc processor is also a possibility according to Window Central.
The Surface Book lineup is also likely to be refreshed, but the device is already offered with a USB-C port.
All three Surface lines are expected to receive updated processors and additional memory without any radical changes to their existing form factors.
Outside the Surface announcements, Microsoft might throw in some other surprises as well. ZDNet reported that Microsoft could use the event to announce a shipping date for its Hololens 2 announced back in May. Accessories including new Surface earbuds and new keyboards with a dedicated Office button are said to be possibilities for the event as well. In addition, there’s a report that a consumer version of Microsoft Teams called “Teams for Life” may be announced.
The event is scheduled to be held in New York City.
