Exponential data growth fuels objective-driven observability for Sumo Logic

Moore’s Law, the decades-old observation that the number of transistors in a microchip will double every two years, may be finally slowing down according to a number of industry leaders. Yet, the principle of exponential growth is still alive and well when it comes to enterprise data.

In a time when the explosion of data may not always keep pace with expansion of budgets to deal with it, this is when companies such as Sumo Logic Inc. are seizing the opportunity.

“Budgets are not exponentially growing, so how do you cope with this onslaught of data?” asked Bruno Kurtic (pictured), vice president of product and strategy at Sumo Logic. “The complexity and the analytics required to actually make sense of that data and serve it to the right constituency in your business are really hard. That is what we have been trying to solve.”

Kurtic spoke with Jeff Frick (@JeffFrick), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the Sumo Logic Illuminate event in Burlingame, California. They discussed different ways that data is used within organizations and the impact of connected devices on compute technologies (see the full interview with transcript here). (* Disclosure below.)

Different needs for data

Managing vast amounts of data demands observability, being able to see and act on the information at-hand. While Sumo Logic has developed a number of tools to help enterprises cope with the issue of observability, the company has also recognized that it can mean different things to key enterprise stakeholders.

For DevOps personnel, observability can mean data from an application and runtime metrics, while security managers may want to see breach and compliance information. It all depends on the user’s objective.

“All of the data is multi-faceted and multi-useful,” Kurtic noted. “Observability to us is objective-driven. If you don’t know what your objective is, observability is just a tool.”

Objective-driven observability has taken on added significance as data generated from internet of things devices is becoming more common with the proliferation of connected products across multiple industries.

“Our biggest customers are IoT customers,” Kurtic said. “Now, the computation you interface with runs in your doorbell, in a light switch, in the light bulbs. Enterprises building applications to serve their customers are simply pushing computation farther and farther.”
