Taking aim at Hadoop, Teradata brings its Vantage analytics platform to Google Cloud

Teradata Corp. today announced a partnership with Google LLC to bring its flagship Vantage analytics toolkit to the search giant’s cloud platform.

Vantage is a software suite designed to serve as a kind of Swiss army knife for business intelligence teams, providing all the core features they need to do their work. It enables workers to process data using a variety of analytics engines, from Spark to TensorFlow, and using a variety of programming languages. There are also connectors that make it possible to export data to outside tools for further processing.

Teradata will provide Vantage on Google Cloud as a managed service. The company will handle all the day-to-day maintenance of customers’ deployments, including security and infrastructure administration.

Vantage is set to launch on Google Cloud in the first half of 2020. In that same period, Teradata plans to release new features for the toolkit that will also become available on Amazon Web Services Inc. and Microsoft Corp.’s Azure, the other cloud platforms it supports.

The software maker will roll out a pay-as-you-go billing option that will enable companies to be billed based on how much they data they process. The pricing shakeup will be accompanied by an expanded lineup of storage options. Vantage is set to receive native support for the respective objective storage services of AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, which provide a low-cost means of safekeeping unstructured data such as documents.

“We enable companies to start small and elastically scale resources only when needed, and then pay only for what they use,” said Ashish Yajnik, Teradata’s vice president of product management. “Adding Google Cloud Platform to the global footprint already offered by Teradata will provide customers with unrivaled choice and flexibility with how and where they use Teradata Vantage.”

Teradata is pitching Vantage to, among others, companies that are looking to move away from the Hadoop data processing framework. Hadoop experienced a surge of popularity a few years ago but adoption has since slowed considerably. Teradata is launching a new bundle of tools and professional services dubbed the Hadoop Migration Program that it said will make it easier for enterprises to switch to Vantage.

As for Google, the Teradata partnership will allow it to expand the selection of analytics tools available for users of its cloud platform. It may even help the search giant win more deals. Google’s salesforce can now go after companies that run Vantage on their on-premises infrastructure or rival cloud platforms and might consider switching.
