Dell EMC’s Data Domain, the purpose-built, backup array leader according to IDC Research Inc., has been rebranded and retooled as a bigger, faster system. Now part of the recently launched PowerProtect DD Series, the technology has been enhanced for speed, security, efficiency, and multicloud data protection.
“With the improvements that we’ve made with instant access and instant recovery, now up to 60 concurrent virtual machines can be available from your PowerProtect DD,” said Beth Phalen (pictured), president of the Data Protection Division at Dell EMC. “We’re really changing the way that Data Domain can be used.”
Phalen spoke with Dave Vellante (@dvellante), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, at theCUBE’s studio in Boston, Massachusetts. Rüya Barrett, vice president of marketing, data protection at Dell EMC, also spoke with Vellante in a separate interview. They discussed new features of the next-generation appliances and enhanced disaster recovery capabilities (see the full discussion with transcript here.) (* Disclosure below.)
The latest generation is significantly faster, using Dell’s PowerEdge servers and 8TB disk drives, replacing the 4TB drives in earlier versions. PowerProtect can also provide instant restore up to 60,000 input/output operations per second for a maximum of 64 virtual machines.
“At the end of the day, it’s all about customer value,” Barrett said. “What we’re seeing with the PowerProtect DD series are service-level objectives where customers have 38% faster backups and 36% faster restores. Customers want efficiency because it really affects their cost of ownership.”
Cloud Disaster Recovery is integrated into PowerProtect DD and supports the Data Manager feature and an on-premises backup source. Customers can add the cloud and its economies of scale as a disaster recovery site without needing an off-premises data center.
“With PowerProtect DD on day one, combined with PowerProtect Data Manager, you’ll be able to use our cloud disaster protection capabilities that include orchestration,” Phalen explained. “It’s just three steps to failover, two steps to failback, and you get all the benefits of disaster recovery but at a lower cost with the ability and agility by leveraging the cloud provider of your choice.”
