Actifio’s latest release speeds up multicloud data recovery

Copy data management software company Actifio Inc. today added some new features to its platform that it says will help enterprise customers to use public cloud services faster, and at a lower cost, for their data-driven transformation initiatives.

Founded in 2009, Actifio has made a name for itself by applying virtualization technology to data management. It does so by separating data backup and protecting from the storage infrastructure.

The company’s Virtual Data Pipeline technology creates what is essentially a “golden copy” of a company’s data that’s exposed through application programming interfaces to the applications and people that need to use it. Most important, Actifio’s platform lets customers restore their data stores to any previous point in time within just a few minutes, helping them avert any potential disasters that might arise from data loss or corruption.

In a 2016 interview on SiliconANGLE’s mobile livestreaming studio theCUBE, Actifio Chief Executive Officer Ash Ashutosh explained that the company’s offering is like an enterprise scale version of the File History feature in Windows, or Time Machine on MacOS.

The latest version of Actifio’s software, Actifio 10c, adds one-click multicloud disaster recovery orchestration for Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform, making it easy to recover thousands of on-premises or cloud-based virtual machines, or emulations of servers in software, and physical servers with a single click.

Also new is the multicloud scale-out recovery feature, which provides elastic and intelligent load balancing for object storage, helping to reduce the operational burden and cost of data recovery operations.

Actifio 10c further helps to speed up application and test release cycles through its ability to clone multiterabyte databases inside Kubernetes-managed software containers.

Other new features include automated data management for popular databases such as SAP HANA/ASE/MaxDB, Oracle, Oracle EBS, MS SQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL and Db2. Actifio 10c now offers “application-consistent backup, instant recovery, and rapid cloning” for databases hosted on-premises and in public clouds such as AWS, GCP and Microsoft Azure, the company said.

The direct-to-cloud VMware protection feature also deserves a mention. With this, customers can reduce costs by protecting their VMware VMs on cloud object storage with or without the need for an on-premises copy. That helps customers to be more flexible by storing their backups in multiple clouds and recover them instantly, as necessary, Actifio said.

Enterprise Strategy Group analyst Christophe Bertrand said Actifio was offering customers a simpler and more cost-effective and efficient approach to multicloud copy data management.

“It is becoming clear that adopting intelligent data management strategies like this will drive more operational efficiency and accelerate digital transformation,” Bertrand said.

Actifio said the new version of its platform will be rolled out to customers in the first quarter of next year. The new features will also come to the company’s software-as-a-service offering Actifio GO.
