Dell debuts subscription model for hybrid cloud deployments on VxRail

Dell Technologies Inc. today introduced a new subscription-based offer for hybrid cloud deployments with its Dell EMC VxRail hyperconverged infrastructure appliance.

The offer includes the hardware and software, plus services such as support, deployment and asset recovery, that are necessary for rapid hybrid cloud deployments. Dell said the offering is the “fastest hybrid cloud deployment” model in the industry.

“In this hybrid and multicloud era, organizations see cloud computing as an operating model and not a destination,” Deepak Patil, senior vice president and general manager of Dell’s Cloud Platforms and Solutions unit, said in a statement. “They are seeking simplified IT experiences with common operations and cost transparency wherever their workloads are located.”

Dell said customers can choose from a one-year or three-year agreement, priced on a-per month, per-node basis, starting at $70 per node per day. It said deployments can take as little as just two weeks.

The new offering is part of a broader range of consumption-based offerings from the company, which it calls Dell Technologies on Demand.

The company’s hybrid cloud strategy is aimed at trying to knit its data center and hybrid cloud technologies with those of major cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services Inc. Central to Dell’s cloud effort is its VMware Inc. subsidiary, which provides the software for a platform that can span both private and public cloud resources. VxRail is the appliance of choice as it provides deep integrati0n with the VMware ecosystem.

Dell’s hybrid cloud push is part of a larger transition by the company, which intends to transform its business into a software and services-focused operation by 2022. The plan will see Dell make its entire portfolio of products available through subscription and pay-per-use offerings.

Today’s announcement is all about Dell trying to protect its turf in on-premises workload management, said Constellation Research Inc. analyst Holger Mueller.

“The new offering is based on Dell EMC VxRail and has an impressive 14-day go-live target,” Mueller said. “CxOs will compare this to pure cloud deployments that are ready in hours and come with next-generation compute platform options such as AWS Outposts and Google Anthos. But competition is always healthy and they now have more choices.”

Hewlett-Packard Enterprise Co. is pursuing a similar strategy to Dell, making its hardware and software available via subscriptions to HPE Greenlake.
