Pitching unified cloud backup, Clumio extends its platform to Microsoft 365

Clumio Inc., fresh off a large funding round, today added Microsoft 365 support to its backup platform.

Santa Clara, California-based Clumio exited stealth mode last August with a cloud-based backup platform that allows companies to create contingency copies of their data. The startup went on to raise a $135 million investment two months later. At the time, it touted the funding as the largest Series C round ever for an enterprise software-as-a-service startup under two years old.

Clumio can back up data from on-premises VMware environments, Amazon Web Services and now Microsoft 365 as well. Microsoft 365 is the new name for Office 365 that Microsoft introduced this month. Clumio enables administrators to schedule periodic backups of users’ Outlook mailboxes, specify how long copies should be stored and recover entire mailboxes or individual emails when the need arises.

One of the main use cases Clumio focuses on is helping enterprises restore data lost in ransomware attacks. To make sure the backups are not compromised by hackers as well, Clumio stores them in a read-only format and takes other security precautions.

“It’s very different from the regular security market,” Clumio Chief Executive Officer Poojan Kumar (pictured) told SiliconANGLE after the startup’s latest funding round. “Basically, [we provide] backup after a cybersecurity attack or other problems. Customers can go back to a point in time to when things were fine.”

Clumio said today’s update makes its platform the first to provide capabilities for backing up private cloud, public cloud and software-as-a-service environments in a single offering. This unified feature set could help the startup better compete for large enterprises that store data across many systems and need to keep them all protected. Using a single platform to back up multiple environments is theoretically easier than using separate tools.

Additionally, the Microsoft 365 support could help Clumio generate more revenue from existing customers by allowing them to increase usage of its platform and start protecting users’ Outlook mailboxes as well.

Clumio may have an opportunity to enhance its Microsoft 365 support further down the road by adding integrations for other services in the suite, such as SharePoint and OneDrive. To grow its addressable market, the startup could also potentially add support for other popular software-as-a-service platforms such as Google LLC’s G Suite.

Clumio competes with Commvault Inc. and other established data protection providers as well as fellow startups such as Cohesity Inc, which recently closed its own large funding round.
