Morpheus’ multicloud management platform gets new security, automation features

Morpheus Data LLC, the maker of a multicloud management platform used by the likes of McDonald’s Corp., today debuted new security and automation features meant to ease infrastructure management for enterprises.

Greenwood Village, Colorado-based Morpheus spun out of private equity firm Bertram Capital in 2015. Its namesake platform acts as a centralized hub for managing technology environments across the major public clouds, smaller platforms such as DigitalOcean and on-premises data centers. Morpheus says the platform enables organizations to shave up to 30% off their cloud bills.

The first major focus area of today’s upgrades is security. Enterprises running Morpheus can now use the microsegmentation features in VMware Inc.’s NSX-T and Unisys Corp.’s Stealth product to isolate internal systems from one another, which helps block unauthorized communications. NSX-T is VMware’s cloud network management platform, while Unisys’ Stealth is a suite of security solutions that among other things provides microsegmentation features.

Morpheus has also expanded its automation capabilities as part of the update. The company’s platform enables administrators to create automation scripts to handle repetitive infrastructure management tasks, as well as combine scripts into complex multistep workflows. A new integration will now enable a company’s developers to create their automation scripts of their own using GitHub and other Git-based code hosting tools to reduce the load on administrators.

Morpheus’ various management capabilities are accessible via a centralized graphic interface. That interface is being upgraded with new analytics features, most notably the ability to create custom dashboards to track a company’s cloud instances. Administrators now have more ways to export data about their instances to external diagnostics tools for deeper analysis.

Capping off the update is a set of new platform integrations. Morpheus can now manage workloads running on the latest version of Microsoft Corp.’s Azure Kubernetes Service and offers expanded support for Google Cloud Platform and Oracle Cloud. In conjunction, the company has added support for Amazon Linux 2, a custom Linux distribution Amazon Web Services Inc. offers for its cloud customers.

Multicloud support is emerging as a  major priority in the infrastructure management market. VMware has evolved its strategy to focus on supporting multicloud enterprise environments, while Google is pursuing a similar approach by extending some of its public cloud’s features to the rival platforms of AWS and Microsoft. Morpheus is betting that there’s also room for smaller players in this increasingly interconnected competitive landscape.

Dave Vellante, chief analyst at SiliconANGLE sister market research firm Wikibon, commented in a February report on the multicloud ecosystem that “we see a battle brewing between the big companies with large appetites gobbling up major portions of the market with integrated suites, and smaller, nimbler players that are delivering best of breed functionality and innovation.”
