Partnership with HPE fuels customer interest in startup Pensando

When Pensando Systems Inc. emerged from stealth mode in October, the company unveiled its programmable processor built for edge computing along with $278 million in funding, led primarily by Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co.

During today’s Future Proof Your Enterprise event, Pensando executives provided a glimpse into customer growth and the nature of the startup firm’s relationship with HPE.

“HPE sort of serves like a quasi-Cisco environment for us because we’re depending on their engine to find our leads, and it’s worked out really well,” said Randy Pond (pictured), chief financial officer of Pensando. “On the cloud side, we have three committed customers today, and on the enterprise side, we’re modeling ourselves with the top 200 HPE customers right now. HPE opens the door, and we explain the technology to the technical team. They see a place for us, let us stand up a proof of concept, and then we go from there.”

Pond spoke with Stu Miniman, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during Pensando’s Future Proof Your Enterprise event. They discussed Pensando’s growth since emerging from stealth and a view of market opportunities for the remainder of the year. (* Disclosure below.)

Delivering on roadmap

Pensando’s partnership with HPE is apparently contributing positively to the startup’s bottom line as it moves through the remainder of this volatile year.

“We’ve done a good job of delivering on our roadmap from a product perspective,” Pond said. “We released to cloud customers a month or two ago, and we just did a release to the enterprise space through HPE. We overachieved in Q1, and it looks like we’re going to overachieve again in Q2 both in terms of units and dollars. We’re in a good place.”

Although the global pandemic has wreaked havoc on markets around the world and severely impacted a number of industries, such as retail, travel and hospitality, Pensando has been encouraged by signs from major cloud providers, financial institutions, and large pharmaceutical companies.

“The cloud players are telling us their demand is up dramatically, and the signal they’re sending us is they want to accelerate deployment and it’s likely to be bigger than we estimated,” Pond said. “If you look at financial, if you look at the pharmaceuticals, their demand is up quite a bit. It’s been a good opportunity for us to seize the moment and demonstrate how we can be part of their new implementations and bring new services to them.”
