VMware buys Blue Medora’s True Visibility business unit

Software virtualization giant VMware Inc. today announced its second acquisition in as many days, saying it intends to buy the team and technology behind Blue Medora Inc.’s True Visibility Suite.

The idea with the acquisition is to improve the self-driving operations capabilities of VMware’s artificial intelligence-powered vRealize Operations product, which helps information technology teams to run production operations in a hassle-free way.

More specifically, vRealize Operations is used by enterprises to manage and provision workloads such as compute, storage, network and application services at scale in hybrid cloud environments. The platform offers management capabilities for software-defined data centers and multiple-cloud setups that help customers to address three crucial business use cases, including intelligent operations, automated information technology and DevOps-ready IT, which combines development and operations staff for more efficient application development.

Blue Medora’s True Visibility product suite includes various management packs that help to make vRealize Operations more useful. Users can gain more visibility and insights into their data center and hybrid cloud environments via a single dashboard. The True Visibility management packs also enable dynamic discovery of customer applications and infrastructure, and provide a way to map and analyze metrics data that can help to further automate customer environments.

The acquisition isn’t that much of a surprise, since VMware and the True Visibility Suite team have been official partners for several years already and have more than 400 mutual customers. In a blog post, Ajay Singh, senior vice president and general manager of Cloud Management BU at VMware, said the True Visibility team has helped the company expand vRealize Operation’s scope and support for packaged applications, data center infrastructure, middleware and public clouds.

“VMware vRealize Operations has extended its reach to a growing number of applications, middleware software, clouds and hardware servers, storage devices, and more, with the help of the partnership with Blue Medora,” Alex Wang, vice president of corporate development at VMware, added in a statement.

Singh said that once the acquisition is completed, vRealize Operations customers will be able to benefit from tighter integration with the True Visibility Suite, which will continue to be sold as a standalone product. “With access to rich data across more third-party applications, middleware, infrastructure and cloud, customers can expect broader and enhanced self-driving operations management across their hybrid clouds environments,” Singh said.

“Autonomous characteristics are key to make infrastructure more resilient, less dependent on human availability capacity and talent – while freeing human operators from routine tasks and opening time for more challenging and with that likely more rewarding activities,” said Holger Mueller, principal analyst at Constellation Research Inc. “It will be key to see where VMware will take these new capabilities.”

The acquisition comes a day after VMware announced its intent to buy the disaster recovery-as-a-service firm Datrium Inc. for an undisclosed price in an effort to bolster its own site recovery services. Prior to that, VMware bought the Kubernetes security firm Octarine Inc. in May, and an anti-malware research startup called Lastline Inc. in June.
