Unusual consulting partnership drives business value in the cloud

Why would the consulting arm of one of the largest technology companies in the world partner with one of the largest consulting companies in the world?

The answer is that such a partnership makes sense when the combination of capabilities results in a differentiated offering that brings true value to the customer base for both. This was a primary factor in the partnership, called Elevate, between Oracle Consulting and Deloitte Consulting LLP.

“On the Deloitte side we have deep capabilities and a broad range of technologies, some of them competing technologies with Oracle,” said Jeff Davis (pictured, right), principal and chief commercial officer for Oracle at Deloitte. “At the same time, we didn’t have a great deal of depth in Oracle’s technical products, Oracle Cloud infrastructure and Oracle Autonomous [Database]. We really found ourselves in a situation where we could put those capabilities together and offer something to our clients and the broad rage of Oracle customers in the field.”

Davis spoke with Dave Vellante, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, as part of Oracle Consulting’s “Empowering the Autonomous Enterprise of the Future” initiative. He was joined by Aaron Millstone (pictured, left), senior vice president of cloud consulting at Oracle. They discussed how the two firms offer complimentary cloud solutions for customers and rising interest among enterprise companies in consolidating infrastructure spending and resources. Cloud-migration solutions

Deloitte and Oracle Consulting both leverage two major solutions as part of their consulting partnership. Oracle Consulting’s Soar combines cloud methodology with automated migration utilities, and Deloitte’s ATADATA is a cloud management platform with scalable technology.

“If you combine these together you get a very comprehensive view of what exactly it is that we’re looking at with a customer,” Millstone said. “We can get a very comprehensive view based on facts. We’ve even got a joint war room that’s constantly engaging with different account teams and making sure that we structurally approach things in a consistent way so that we’re driving business value.”

Elevate, which was launched last September, is designed to blend Deloitte’s expertise in maximizing business efficiency at scale with Oracle’s extensive technology platforms.

“Deloitte approaches the client conversation from a business value perspective, and the Oracle Consulting team tends to approach conversations with a focus on how to do the technology,” Millstone noted. “As we get into the bigger transformational plays, we need the Deloitte model of how to drive real business value. And then, from a technologist’s perspective, that’s when we show up. It really has been a very logical, complementary match.”

Renewing infrastructure

The two firms are tailoring solutions to meet rising enterprise interest in retooling infrastructure with a move toward cloud. A Deloitte survey published last August found that data modernization and cloud migration were reaching a tipping point among medium- and large-sized businesses.

“There’s a strong value proposition in infrastructure renewal,” Davis said. “The boards are pressing the C-suite for a cloud strategy. Our perspective is that it’s fair to believe that the cloud will reduce infrastructure spend significantly, and it’s a great opportunity for consolidation.”
