Nasuni raises $40M and upgrades its cloud file storage platform

Cloud file storage company Nasuni Corp. said today it has raised $25 million in a new round of funding, plus an additional $15 million debt facility that brings its total amount raised to date to $169 million.

The round was led by Family Offices, Venture Capital and Corporate Venture, with participation from Goldman Sachs, Telstra Ventures, Northbridge Venture Partners and others.

The company also announced a major upgrade to its storage platform to support remote workers.

Nasuni sells a unique file storage platform that’s comprised of a network-attached storage appliance that can either store data locally or send it to the cloud. This capability means that Nasuni’s appliances effectively provide an unlimited storage capacity, removing the need for customers to plan and carry out complicated hardware upgrades every time their trove of data outgrows their internal infrastructure.

Nasuni’s file storage system is useful because the most frequently used data can be stored locally, so that access requests can be fulfilled faster than if the data is stored in a third-party data center located hundreds or even thousands of miles away. In addition, Nasuni’s appliances can copy data to Amazon Web Services and other cloud platforms across multiple regions for redundancy purposes. So if one data center suffers an outage, the customer’s information should still be accessible from elsewhere.

The enhancements to Nasuni’s file storage platform include a new Nasuni Cloud File Services for Microsoft Windows Virtual Desktop feature, which couples cloud file storage with cloud-based virtual desktops at a lower cost than traditional file storage, the company said.

There’s also a new feature that brings proactive detection and correction of issues at the edge, plus new active-active global file locking servers that improve the resiliency of remote file locking and file synchronization. In addition, Nasuni has added support for Azure Ultra Disk and Premium SSD to enable better-performing file access for users when Nasuni files are hosted on Microsoft Corp.’s Azure cloud.

On the security side, meanwhile, Nasuni has introduced a feature called Continuous File Versioning that enables data to be recovered quickly in the event of a ransomware attack. Instead of having to recover good files from backup, the system enables users to roll back immediately from snapshots to the last good version, wherever it resides.

Finally, Nasuni said it now supports Amazon Web Services Inc.’s Snowball Edge devices for faster migration to the AWS public cloud. The company said it now can move up to 100 terabytes of data to AWS within 30 days.
