What would CNCF do? Team ‘cloud native’ tackles 2020 challenges through open-source ethos

In a year where cloud transformation became a do-or-die choice for many organizations, the Cloud Native Computing Foundation is shining a light through the complexities of adapting to a remote-first world.

“We are committed to bringing the open-source, cloud native way to help support this full global push to overcome 2020 as a year,” said Priyanka Sharma (pictured), general manager of CNCF.

Sharma spoke with Stu Miniman, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during the KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe Virtual event. They discussed the importance of CNCF’s open-source community and cloud native trends in the “internet of things,” DevSecOps and end-user driven open source. (* Disclosure below.)

Open-source community embraces the end user

When a company or organization decides to utilize cloud computing technology, the process generally starts by choosing a cloud model and hosting platform, such as Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud Platform. But cloud adoption means more than migrating applications and data. In order to take full advantage of the flexibility of cloud computing, the way the software is developed has to change.

“You start developing with microservices, containerization happens, [and] once that happens you need to orchestrate the containers, which is where Kubernetes — our founding project — comes in,” Sharma said.

With an objective to host and proliferate technologies that support cloud native infrastructure development, the CNCF is reaching out to support new members of the community and help them excel in the cloud native world. With both formal education, such as the foundation’s edX training courses and certifications, and more informally through meetups, webinars and events such KubeCon: “You name it, and we’re here for you,” Sharma said.

Describing the community as a large and inclusive group of people “who are all doers, everybody’s collaboration matters, and together they create end user-driven open source,” Sharma encourages everyone to become involved, no matter their background or level of expertise.

“Come to our events, give us feedback, share ideas,” she said. “We’re all team cloud native, and we’re in this together. We will go through 2020; we’ll come out strong. This is just the beginning.”
