BigID adds Hyperscan tool for large volumes of unstructured data

Data protection and privacy startup BigID Inc. said today it’s adding a new Hyperscan technology to its platform that enables customers to scan large volumes of unstructured file data hosted in their internal data centers or in the cloud at petabyte scale.

The idea is to expedite processes such as classifying, cataloging and correlating sensitive data in high-volume stores such as Box, Google Drive, Sharepoint, Office 365, Amazon S3, NetApp and EMC for data compliance, privacy, remediation, access governance and cloud migration.

BigID’s main product offering is a tool that helps companies protect and monitor the privacy of their customers’ personal data. It uses proprietary machine learning algorithms to deliver what it calls “identity intelligence” that allows users to find, track and “de-risk” identity data stored on customer’s servers. The company claims a unique ability to instantly locate data belonging to specific individuals, a key requirement of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation and other rules.

One problem that companies, face however, is that they tend to store a lot of their data in an unstructured format in cloud-based, high volume data stores such as Box, Google or Microsoft Office. This unstructured data, which can include documents such as PDFs, spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations, is very difficult to keep track of, BigID said. As a result, many companies could still face compliance issues when it comes to this kind of data.

BigID’s new Hyperscan technology solves this problem by using machine learning to prioritize how data is processed according to the content type and context. As a result, it can “speed scan” unstructured data without losing any precision and find sensitive information 95% faster than other data scanning approaches, the company claims.

Some of the benefits of Hyperscan include being able to enforce data compliance on unstructured data, cluster similar files together, flag duplicate documents and minimize data for security or cloud migration purposes, the company said.

“Hyperscan is a transformative step that enables organizations to save up to 95% of their scan time for historically problematic unstructured files,” said BigID co-founder and head of product Nimrod Vax. “It enables organizations to know what’s in their file stores faster and in so doing, can simplify compliance, privacy, cloud migration and governance.”
