GraphQL startup Hasura reels in $9.9M to simplify database operations

Hasura Inc., a startup commercializing the Facebook Inc.-developed GraphQL data management technology, today announced that it has closed a $9.9 million funding round led by Vertex Ventures.

SAP SE’s early-stage SAP.iO Fund contributed as well. So did a number of other investors, including GitHub infrastructure engineering head Sam Lambert and Firebase founder James Tamplin.

San Francisco-based Hasura’s flagship Hasura GraphQL Engine is built around GraphQL, an open-source tool created by Facebook that makes it easier for developers to work with databases. GraphQL is essentially an access layer that simplifies the task of retrieving and editing database records. GraphQL has become immensely popular, even getting its own open-source foundation, because it can speed up application projects a great deal, but the productivity benefits are often hard to realize on account of the tool’s complexity.

Enter Hasura. The startup’s product speeds up the task of adding GraphQL to a database and, it claims, allows developers to set up a basic deployment in a few seconds.

Hasura GraphQL Engine makes it possible to create queries of varying complexity, such as a request that pulls records from two separate customer databases, merges them and then imports the information into a user analytics application. The product also provides features to help administrators with day-to-day maintenance.

Hasura said its software, which is open source like GraphQL itself, is used by thousands of development teams in industries including tech, healthcare and aerospace. The startup hopes to make money from Hasura GraphQL Engine’s popularity with a paid version called Hasura Pro that adds advanced features such as tools for investigating technical problems.

Hasura will use the newly announced funding round to grow its headcount and add support for more platforms besides PostgreSQL, the database with which it’s mainly used nowadays. “While we double down on the Postgres ecosystem, these funds will help us bring the Hasura and GraphQL experience to other databases to mobilize data in organizations,” said Hasura Chief Executive Officer Tanmai Gopal.

Hasura has raised $11.5 million from investors to date.
