Spinnaker-as-a-service startup Armory raises $40M

Armory Inc., which offers the open-source continuous delivery software platform Spinnaker as a cloud service, said today it has raised $40 million in new funding to accelerate research, customer support, sales and marketing.

The Series C round was led by B Capital and included Edge Capital, Salesforce.com Inc. Chief Executive Marc Benioff, Insight Partners, Crosslink Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, Mango Capital, Y Combinator and Javelin Venture Partners.

Founded in 2016, Armory offers an enterprise version of Spinnaker, the open-source continuous delivery software platform designed to work with Kubernetes, Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services Inc., Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud.

The company’s Spinnaker-as-a-service cloud platform, which it pitches as scalable, flexible and secure, automates software delivery, enabling software teams to collaborate from code to cloud. Armory builds on Spinnaker’s foundation with proprietary features for bolstered enterprise scale, along with enterprise-grade support.

Armory’s service includes support for multicloud and hybrid environments with support for DevSecOps and compliance. The company also provides support for cloud and Kubernetes migration designed to make moving to Kubernetes or from one cloud to another through seamless workload portability.

Armory’s platform has more than 2,000 customers in financial services, technology, retail, healthcare and entertainment. They include JPMorgan Chase & Co., Autodesk Inc., Xero Ltd., Patreon, OpenX Software Ltd. and Hired Inc.

“We are entering an era of Big Code, where source code becomes the DNA of a company,” Armory CEO Daniel R. Odio said in a statement. “Legacy software delivery tooling built for data centers cannot handle the massive complexity that comes with coordinating thousands of developers as they break monolithic apps into hundreds of microservices and deploy to dozens of targets across multiple clouds like AWS, GCP and Azure.”

Along with the funding announcement, Armory also announced a number of new appointments. Joining the company as chief operating officer is Margaret Francis, most recently senior vice president of product management and general manager of Heroku, a Salesforce company. Sarah Sproehnle, previously vice president of customer success at Confluent Inc., joins Armory in the same role.

Including the new funding, Armory has raised $82 million to date.
