Dell and VMware expand collaboration to boost success of cloud provider partners

Cloud computing is dominated by the “big three” — Amazon Web Services cloud, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform. But they don’t own the entire market. There are plenty of lesser-known cloud services providers; and approximately 4,000 of them are part of the Dell Technologies Inc. partner ecosystem.

“One of the things we call our partners internally is the fourth mega-cloud,” said Guy Bartram (pictured, left), global product marketing and go-to-market specialist at VMware Inc.

Bartram and Doug Lieberman (pictured, right), director of global alliances at Dell EMC Infrastructure Solutions Group, spoke with Lisa Martin, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during the Dell Technologies World Digital Experience event. They discussed the release of VMware Cloud Director on Dell Technologies Cloud Platform and how it is helping their partner ecosystem of cloud services providers focus on higher level services in hybrid and multicloud environments.  (* Disclosure below.)

Dell and VMware expand collaboration

Cloud providers are burdened with providing infrastructure services that have traditionally been “heavy for them to build, [have] taken a long time to get the market, and really had high burn operational costs,” according to Bartram.

Now, VMware and Dell have collaborated on a solution that removes this burden, providing cloud services providers with multi-tenant infrastructure-as-a-service on the Dell Technologies Cloud Platform.

Promising a commitment to “driving the success of our cloud provider partners all over the world,” Dell and VMware have worked together to create solutions that go beyond the needs of the basic hyperconverged infrastructure market and cloud market to address the specific needs of cloud service providers, according to Liebermann.

The solution will bring cloud service providers the “multitenancy aspects of cloud director and all of the speed and efficiencies in application and infrastructure delivery to enable them to address the common need now around hybrid cloud management and hybrid cloud operations,” Bartram confirmed.

This means that cloud providers can redirect engineering resources that were previously tied up making the base cloud work in a service provider format to focus on higher level services.

Results from an IDC business value survey of cloud provider partners using VMware Cloud Director on Dell Technologies Cloud Platform show 72% faster customer onboarding, 57% faster new service delivery, and 31% more efficient information technology operations, according to Bartram.

The benefits reach beyond the cloud service providers themselves, making digital transformation smoother and simpler for enterprise, according to Lieberman.

“VMware and Dell bring together that end-to-end capability to significantly simplify the multicloud experience,” he said. “Ultimately, our service provider partners can help you on that journey to provide that management and orchestration across those different clouds and the data transformation, the digital transformation necessary in order to drive success.”
