CircleCI unveils self-hosted Server 3.0 and integrations with AWS and HashiCorp

CircleCI Inc., a software deployment and integration platform for DevOps, the practice of combining development and operations, today announced new updates to its server self-hosting option for new users.

The company also debuted partner integrations, bringing on board Amazon Web Services Inc. and HashiCorp, among others. “The idea of automation, of being able to move quickly and reliably, is no longer ‘nice to have’ but core to the responsibilities of today’s engineering teams,” said CircleCI Chief Executive Jim Rose.

Continuous integration and delivery means that as changes to apps are developed they are tested, merged, and deployed. This requires not just deep collaboration between development and operations, the root of DevOps, but also tools that enable automation that makes the “continuous” part of that equation possible.

At the heart of this is CircleCI’s newest addition, “Server 3.0,” which is now available to new users. This self-hosted enterprise-scale solution will offer continuous integration and delivery capability on-premises, allowing for strict security compliance and regulatory constraint that customers can control themselves can be certain of it themselves.

Server 3.0 also offers the ability to scale under load and run multiple services at once, all within its own private Kubernetes cluster and network on Google Kubernetes Engine or Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service for a managed hybrid experience.

As a result, Server 3.0 works well for teams that support their own in-house DevOps teams and their own data centers or have custom needs that cannot be served elsewhere.

For DevOps teams, CircleCI offers a registry of more than 2,000 “orbs,” which are proprietary packages of reusable configurations that automate thousands of repeated DevOps processes. The company has doubled its orb registry since the last release.

New integrations include AWS Elastic Beanstalk, Terraform, Codecov and others that will increase efficiency, productivity and scale for users. The company has also added a new Slack orb that allows users to customize and receive unlimited event notifications.

“CI/CD is a mission-critical yet complex component to achieving this, which is why we have been singularly focused on solving this challenge for customers over the last nine years,” said Rose. “CircleCI’s latest additions will make it easier for even more teams to access the most intelligent and performant CI/CD tooling on the market.”

CircleCI also released a new self-hosted solution, CircleCI runner, a way to bring CircleCI’s cloud to any unique infrastructure or compliance use case. With the new capability, customers can choose which jobs run in the cloud and which jobs run on their own infrastructure. That way, there’s no more security concern about separating out jobs before they reach CircleCI’s platform.

In concert with the release, CircleCI also announced support for Arm64 architecture, extending its support for different types of virtual machines. With CircleCI runner, users can build and release on a wider variety of architectures and have the ability to choose which jobs run in the cloud on their own infrastructure.
