Google LLC said today it’s working with the Finnish telecommunications giant Nokia Corp. to deliver advanced 5G networking solutions to communications service providers and enterprises.
The aim is to help cloud service providers or CSPs and other enterprises modernize their network infrastructures and build on a “cloud-native 5G core,” the companies said. They will then be able to build out the network edge as a new business services platform for enterprises.
Google and Nokia said they believe enterprises can take advantage of new monetization opportunities by providing 5G connectivity and advanced services to enterprises at the network edge that will enable new digital experiences for consumers. To enable this, the companies are working together to create new solutions that combine Google’s cloud-based artificial intelligence and analytics tools that run on its Anthos application development platform with Nokia’s 5G operations and networking services.
They will also work together to validate, optimize and evolve cloud-native network functions and other services that will help CSPs deliver 5G connectivity and services at scale, they said.
Google said its Anthos for Telecom offering will serve as the platform for deploying new applications, while Nokia will provide fast connectivity through its voice core, cloud packet core, network exposure function, data management, signaling and 5G core services. The hope is that CSPs will then be able to build up ecosystems of new services that can be deployed anywhere, including in public clouds or at the network edge, where they will benefit from lower latency and eliminate the need for expensive onsite infrastructure.
George Nazi, Google Cloud’s vice president of Telco, Media & Entertainment Industry Solutions, said he believes there’s a tremendous opportunity for CSPs to support digital transformation at the network edge with a combination of 5G connectivity and cloud-native applications. “Doing so requires modernized infrastructure, built for a cloud-native 5G core,” he said.
