Enterprise service mesh startup Tetrate raises $40M

Enterprise service mesh startup Tetrate Inc. has raised $40 million in new funding for product development, to support a new software-as-a-service offering, hire more people and expand its global reach.

The Series B round was led by Sapphire Ventures and included Scale Venture Partners, NTTVC, Dell Technologies Capital, Intel Capital, 8VC and Samsung NEXT.

Founded in 2018, Tetrate offers an enterprise-ready service mesh designed for all workloads and environments. A service mesh platform is an infrastructure layer built into an app that documents how services interact to make it easier to optimize communication and avoid downtime.

Tetrate offers two main products: Tetrate Istio Subscription and TSB Enterprise Service Mesh. Istio is an open-source service mesh that layers transparently onto existing distributed applications, and Tetrate pitches its commercially supported version as offering the “easiest way of deploying Istio.” The company’s Istio offering offers a lifecycle management command-line interface tool that it says ensures the use of supported and trusted versions of Istio.

TSB Enterprise offers a comprehensive service mesh platform for enterprises that need a unified and consistent way to secure managed services and traditional workloads. Both of Tetrate’s offerings work with major cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services Inc., VMware Inc., Google LLC and Microsoft Corp. Azure.

Tetrate counts among its customers Fortune 200 financial services, telecommunications, retail, media and U.S. federal government organizations. Notable customers include GitHub, Square Inc., the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, Fair Isaac Corp. and the U.S. Department of Defense.

“As the microservices revolution picks up steam, it’s indispensable to use Istio for managing applications built with microservices and deployed on containers,” Jai Das, Sapphire Ventures president and partner, said in a statement. “The applications we use daily require a lot of work in the background and Tetrate helps make that happen with its Istio-based service mesh technology, which helps route traffic between microservices, add visibility and enhance security.”

Including the new funding, Tetrate has raised $52.5 million to date, according to Crunchbase.
