Nasuni wants companies to migrate Windows File Servers to Google Cloud

Cloud file storage company Nasuni Corp. is stepping up its tight integration with Google Cloud today with a new migration service that it says will help companies to eliminate the headaches of managing on-premises Windows File Servers.

The company has just announced Nasuni Files for Google Cloud Platform, which combines Google Cloud’s object storage services with Nasuni’s cloud-native file system to ensure easy migration of files from on-premises servers to the cloud.

Nasuni’s cloud file storage system consists of a network-attached storage appliance that can store data either locally or in Google’s cloud. It effectively provides unlimited storage capacity while taking advantage of the object storage economics Google offers.

“Secure and easy-to-manage data migration solutions have become increasingly important to organizations managing mass amounts of data,” Manvinder Singh, director of partnerships at Google Cloud, said in a statement.

Nasuni Files for GCP is aimed at customers that want to reduce the number of on-premises file servers they maintain and speed up their digital transformation by moving to the cloud. The offering enables not only a smooth migration of files to Google’s cloud, but also provides capabilities such as built-in backup, disaster recovery and multisite file synchronization. Once their data is in Google’s cloud, customers will benefit from a more simplified way to manage multiple file servers at scale via a single console, Nasuni said.

The company describes its offering as a “modern alternative” to on-premises Windows File Servers that provides end-to-end file storage options, including department, group and project file shares, home directories, as well as Google Drive for personal file storage and Google Filestore for any high-performance workloads.

Customer’s costs will be reduced significantly, the company claims, as Nasuni Files for GCP uses Google Cloud Archive Storage, the cheapest tier, to store all file data. Yet Nasuni promises the service will still enable access speeds that are equal or superior to on-premises file servers, with no limits on file synchronization or shares.

“The business continuity risks and costs associated with operating and maintaining Windows File Servers have caused enterprises to seek low-impact approaches to cloud migration,” said Nasuni Chief Technology Officer Andres Rodriguez. “With migration included in the Nasuni Files for Google Cloud monthly subscription price, we’re making it as painless and risk-free as we can to move files to the Google Cloud platform and leave expensive, cumbersome on-premises file servers behind.”

Nasuni Files for GCP is available starting today via the Google Cloud Marketplace.
